Welcome to Gompers Fine Arts Option School!
Peace and Greetings Gompers Parents!
Welcome to a new year at the school that goes to college! Several years ago, Gompers decided that it was important to introduce our students to higher learning. We began by familiarizing them with the Black Colleges and Universities. Next we took a group of 7th & 8th graders to visit Indiana University and Ivy Tech College. Last year our 8th grade class spent a day at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
We believe in your child’s academic gifts and talents and invite you to find out what Gompers is all about. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher via phone or email. Teachers are available most mornings from 8:30 -8:50 AM and at other times during non-instruction time. Please contact them to arrange that visit. You can also familiarize yourself with Gompers and staff through our web-site.
We’re also quite proud of partnerships we’ve formed with Erikson Institute and Metropolitan Family Services. Erikson Institute, an affiliate of Loyola University is continuing the great work they’ve done with Jessie Owens in fostering positive social emotional skills through community building and writing. Metropolitan Family Services has included us in the Community School project. Look for really great social and recreational activities to develop from this partnership!
Every student received a planner. It is very important that you take the time to read the parent/student handbook in the front. The planner is also a calendar for the students to organize long-range assignments, record homework and other important information. Make a point of checking it daily. This will enable you to know what they are learning. It also contains learning aides for every subject. These tools will be useful when your child is completing homework assignments. Homework is given every day. In some classes Friday is a homework free night. If in doubt, contact your child’s teacher.
Lastly, some of our children are in danger! They are in danger because they are being dropped off across the street from the school and sent out into the middle of State street traffic. Since I’ve been principal we’ve had two students hit by cars. They were hit because they were sent out into the traffic. We would appreciate it if you would drop your child off on the school side of the street and if you must drop them off on the opposite side, either instruct them to walk to the light and cross or get out of your car and walk them safely across the street.
Thank you so much for allowing us to share your child. We look forward to seeing you on next Wednesday for the Local School Council meeting and Open House.
Educationally yours,
Melody L. Seaton
